Housing for Hospitality Workers in Tulum, Mexico.

The project provides
affordable rents for the workers of the local hotel and restaurant industries, who
are currently being displaced due to a surge in the cost of housing. The design,
comprising 200 apartments, common areas, gardens, and retail spaces is compact
and efficient while retaining a certain monumentality.

In a parcel of jungle at the edge
of the village of Tulum, a series of four-storey blocks are organized in an interlocking
comb-like configuration, spaced by a network of continuous courtyards. All open
spaces in the masterplan retain their existing tropical vegetation, made up of native
palm and deciduous trees, which buffer the units from each other and the
project from the road.

The massing and color of the
buildings are designed to work with the dappled light filtering through the
forest canopy, diminishing the presence of the buildings and creating an
intimate atmosphere. Lining the buildings, circulation corridors are protected
by a porous screen reminiscent of the brise soleils of early brutalism, but
with a finer scale and artisanal finish. Inside the apartments, each dwelling
is a simple tube of space that puts the dweller in contact with nature.

The organization of the project is
an innovative hybrid between modern open block urbanism and traditional
courtyard building, allowing for a heightened sense of privacy, as well as
crossed ventilation, within what is otherwise a fairly high-density housing
project. In the ground floor, all garden-courtyards are linked by pedestrian
walkways, connecting a series of public spaces for work, exercise and
relaxation. In the rooftop, a swimming pool offers a moment of release and a
unique experience of the tropical forest canopy.

Vassallo, Alfonso Jiménez Enciso, and Alfonso Garduño.

Nature Observation Pavilion at Rice University

Located within Rice University Campus, the
Harris Gully Natural Area is a restored watershed that consists of several
microhabitats, from prairie to open woodland to dense shrubland. Because of
Harris Gully, and despite being located at the heart of Houston, Rice is one of
the most biodiverse universities in the country with the highest bird species
list of any campus in North America. The Mass Timber Pavilion, an observation
deck immersed within the landscape, represents the first step in a long-term
plan to manage this ecosystem.

The
pavilion itself is an abstract object, conceived and sited in the picturesque
tradition. Like the ruin of a small temple, it invites and accommodates nature
around it. In its simplicity,
indeterminacy and openness, it insinuates the lightness of touch that should
guide the stewardship of the natural area in the future.

Made
of Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) sourced from Southern Yellow Pine, the pavilion
is a carbon-negative structure and an essay on the possibilities of this sustainable
construction technology. A didactic design, the building showcases the CLT
panels in their purest form, like a giant piece of furniture that conveys the
logic of its assembly. The immediate way
in which the material is presented underlines its structural versatility,
featuring CLT performing as roof, pillar and capital.

The project was designed by Professor
Jesus Vassallo’s mass timber seminar at Rice University, with a team formed by
graduate students Pouya Khadem and Lene Sollie in collaboration with Structural
Engineer Tracy Huynh. Funding for the project was obtained through a federal
grant from the US Forest Service, with additional funds provided by generous
gifts to the School of Natural Sciences and the Lynn
R. Lowrey Arboretum.

Refurbishment
of historic building into offices

In early 2023, Electrolit, the Mexican beverage brand,
bought an early 20th century building in Houston to set up their US
headquarters. Founded in Guadalajara, the company had a tradition of building
urban campuses in low density neighborhoods by slowly buying and repurposing
buildings over time. The structure they chose to begin their journey in
Houston, a low slung, formerly industrial Spanish Revival slab located at the
banks of Buffalo Bayou, resonated the ethos and cultural identity of the
company.

The project became an exercise in translation between the
culture of the Mexican company and its new Texan context. The highly
collaborative architecture team chosen to take on the rebuild was comprised of
Guadalajara based architect Luis Aldrete, Houston-based firm Schaum Architects,
headed by Troy Schaum, and Jesús Vassallo, also based in Houston. The
objective from the outset was to create a contemporary work space imbued with
the sophistication and relaxed character of residential architecture, balancing
the industrial character of the existing building with a warm palette of
natural materials reminiscent of Mexican living.

With this ambition in mind, the architects stripped the
existing concrete structure down to its bones, correcting and repairing some of
the abuses that it had undergone through its many lives. Once the original
space was visible, they introduced a series of volumetric, light wooden boxes
that house smaller programs and inhabit the industrial space as sculptures,
creating and lending proportion to the spaces around them. This strategy
allowed the architects to add a range of needed meeting rooms and private offices
of varying sizes, carefully spaced to delimit larger open work spaces and
lounge areas.

Midway through the design process, Mexican interior
designers Aagnes were brought on board to work on the custom furniture and
decor, a decision that facilitated the sourcing and fabrication of most of the
small-scale elements in from local craftsmen in Guadalajara. As the team worked
to blend the architecture and furniture seamlessly, they continued to deploy
warm tones and raw materials in order to strike a balance between the rough and
the delicate. The result, aided by the thoughtful use of natural light, is a
relaxed and subdued atmosphere that stands in opposition to the stridence of
contemporary corporate vernacular.

Through its careful consideration of existing conditions and
its balance between the industrial and the intimate, the project also manages
to strike a different balance, between the company’s origins in Mexico and its
new location in Houston. Ultimately, this new hybrid identity is a testament to
a discerning client and a diverse group of architects and designers, all
collaborating across borders to find common ground.

Renovation of a Shepherd’s Hut in Cantabria, Spain

Grey House is
the renovation of an abandoned shepherd’s hut in the Pas Valley area of
Cantabria into a house for a young family. In the original building, the ground
floor was occupied by a team of ten milk cows, while the upper floor contained
minimal dwelling facilities for the shepherd and a large space for the storage of
hay. Due to the stringent degree of protection of the original construction
(both the valley’s landscape and the traditional building type are under
preservation regimes), it soon became apparent that the architectural
intervention would be highly restrained. The project then became a subtle
reinterpretation, a careful but playful process of disassembling and
abstracting local housing typologies, siting strategies, and construction details,
of creating something different out of the misreading of those existing conditions.

Suppressing the eaves and playing
with the scale and position of openings yields a building that is monolithic
yet playfully anthropomorphic (it has been likened to a rural emoji), a house
that is small but commanding in its posture. The geometric play of terraces and
small retaining walls helps articulate the relationship of the structure to the
landscape and creates several areas for outdoor life appropriate for the
different times of the day.

Inside, the ground floor plan is
designed to maximize the openness of the living space, with the kitchen,
utilities and stair consolidated in a compact core running along the north facade.
Upstairs, the plan is swiftly divided in three equal parts, producing as many
bedrooms facing south. There is no waste in this layout, which seeks to produce
a sense of generosity in the spaces through the use of solid materials and unusually
large openings.

Both inside and
out, the choice of finishes creates a subdued atmosphere, tempering the
traditional construction into a more contemporary condition without belying its
ethos. The use of grey paint and clay mortars helps blend the material palette
of stone, wood and concrete into something close to a monochrome, resulting in an
ambiguously reserved building that changes appearance with the light of the
day.

Table Set

Mesa Trébol is
a collaboration between brothers Jesús Vassallo (architect) and Luis Vassallo
(visual artist and designer). On one hand, for an architect, designing
furniture can be a lighter commission—an opportunity to break free from the
constraints of building design. Within the realm of furniture, a coffee table
in particular—given its place in the living room—emphasizes this playful and
leisurely quality. In this case, we are presented with a set of tables, a
cluster that can either form the centerpiece of a room or be scattered
throughout the space, finding its own place. On the other hand, for a painter,
the surface of a table becomes a canvas that invites drawing. What initially
began as a series of lily pad-like circles gradually evolved into more complex
botanical motifs—a tropical nature of shapes that recall both the furniture of
the 1950s and the lush painting style of Tarsila do Amaral. Drawing nature is a
way to understand it, to learn from it—not just its forms but also its design.
Drawing a plant is also a way of paying tribute to the nature of the wood that
now forms this object. A reminder that this wood was once a plant, and now,
through these forms, it comes to represent nature once again. Nature imitating
itself.

Conversion of a Stone Farm in Cantabria, Spain

Our
client is a Dutch man who purchased the ruin of a dairy farm in the county of
Valdaliga, in the North of Spain. The property is at the bottom of a secluded
valley, at the edge of a hunting reserve covered by rain forest. A few meters from the house runs a mountain
stream. The original construction is a stone farmstead, built over three stages
starting in the late nineteenth century. Given the needs of the owner and the
available budget, a decision was made to open up one third of the construction
to create a protected porch oriented towards the mountain views in the West. In
the remaining two thirds of the original footprint, the massive stone walls are
restored and the rotting timber structure removed, revealing generous double
height spaces. New services like the kitchen or bathrooms are inserted as light
boxes in the masonry construction. The design is simple but rugged, honoring
the immediacy of the original building.
It provides refuge and comfort in the harsh winter, but also opens up to
the site encouraging the dwellers to enjoy life outdoors.

Contemporary
Art Center in Mexico

A large
infrastructural space is inhabited by cubist wooden sheds containing immersive
installations. The space of the museum is radical in its ambiguity between
interior and exterior. As if inhabiting a ruin, air flows and plants grow under
the geometric array of beams, which cast its changing shadow on the floor and
walls. Somewhere between a factory and a garden, the unfamiliar setting
prepares the visitor for a more intense and immediate encounter with the art
work. In its formal language, the project is an homage to the work of American
artist Sol LeWitt.

Ghosts of
Modernity, Ghosts of the Past

This book
studies the origins and late evolution of modern Mexican architecture through a
series of houses built by two generations of architects during the 1920s and
1980s in Guadalajara. In doing this, the book proposes an alternative history
of Mexican architecture, positioning Guadalajara as a counterpoint to Mexico
City, and putting forward a series of works and ideas that suggest a different
relationship between innovation and tradition.

This is also, inevitably, a book
about Luis Barragán and the long shadow he cast over Mexican architecture. It
explores his early and little-known work as part of a generation of
architect–engineers known as the Escuela Tapatía (the Guadalajara School), which
in the 1920s developed an abstract and stylized reinterpretation of the
regional architecture of Jalisco. Even less well known is the generation of
architects who began their careers in Guadalajara in the early 1980s. This
group took the work of Barragan and his colleagues from the 1920s as the
starting point for their own production, resulting in an echo of an echo—a
reinterpretation through time of an increasingly distant and abstracted
original.

Community
Center and Emergency Shelter in Houston

The community
center is located along Lyons Avenue, in Houston’s Fifth Ward, one of the
city’s historic African American communities. The site is chosen such that the
community center reinforces an East-West axis of neighborhood civic
institutions, and becomes the logistic center for its famed Easter Renaissance
Festival. Additionally, the site is located on high ground, South of one of the
most vulnerable parts of town which sit on the floodplain, making it a natural
haven for neighbors affected by Houston’s recurring flood events.

On normal days, the Fifth Ward
Haven acts as a neighborhood hub for cultural, and civic events, as well as a
place where children of all ages can enjoy after school activities and play in
a safe and inspiring environment. On the day of an emergency, however, the free
plan of the building is cleared out to operate as a shelter, with the ancillary
modules flanking the main volume acting as support spaces to provide all basic
needs, and symbolically represent the strength and resilience of the
neighborhood.
