Adaptive Reuse of School Buildings into
Housing for the
Elderly
The project draws on the vocabulary of the existing to create a recognizable architecture: It is wrapped in brick, replicates openings, and continues the geometric principles of the San Esteban school, but its profile is altered to generate distinction in an environment marked by repetition.
The transformation develops horizontally, minimizing the impact on the existing structure and generating a new front oriented toward the city. On the east side, it offers a space for exchange between the elderly and children of the neighborhood. On the west, it retracts to serve the private functions of the new facility.
The design of the homes is based on adaptability—not just to accommodate situations requiring assistance or alternative mobility, but above all, to reflect the wishes and uniqueness of future residents. The beauty of combining these possibilities lies in highlighting the importance of space in supporting diverse uses and activities.
